I live in Belgrade, Serbia for almost two years now. It is a new country for me, so I’m trying to find out more about it’s people and culture, trying to be included in a local social life.
Sometime ago I bought a newspaper called Liceulice from a guy in a blue jacket on a street. I’ve heard that it is a social project which is helping people who struggle to find a job or to be included into society. Well, I had bought it, gave it a glance, didn’t find nothing interesting (as I thought) and forgot about it.
Two months later, I found March’s edition on my journal table and decided to gave it one more chance. And surprisingly I found out it was very interesting! Looks like I was careless previous time.
Interviews with local writers, important social topics, society’s mental health and much more. It is a little bit difficult for me to read it on Serbian, but I’m actively learning it, on the one hand, and using image / photo translator, on the other, to help me with this struggle.
Photo of quite satirical cover from 2017 that impressed me (text: “I’m not interested in politics”):
Here is the list of topics from different magazine issues:
Translation: “Over the years, we have dealt with topics that are clearly connected with politics, such as democracy (43 issue), anti-fascism (47 issue), nationalism (71 issue), capitalism and the exploitation of resources (79 issue) or elections (80 issue). However, even in those issues, which, at the first glance, are dealing with topics that are not “political”, we tried to write them in a political way. This way we wrote about the old age (39 issue), fortune (54 issue), living in the countryside (73 issue), crisis of trust in science (70 issue), loneliness (74 issue), privacy (87 issue) or football (89 issue).”
Looks like it is my new favorite local magazine now. Recommended!
